UPS to drop 15,000 spouses from insurance, cites Obamacare...

FEDS: Sex trafficker wearing 'I make pimpin' look easy' T-shirt when busted...

AUGUST 20--A California man charged with the sex trafficking of a teenage girl was wearing a t-shirt declaring “I make pimpin’ look easy” when he was arrested late last month, records show.
Martell Davis, 34, was collared by San Diego Police Department vice cops conducting an “incall” operation at a Best Western hotel, according to federal court filings.
As part of that probe, a detective located an ad on backpage.com “advertising a female for prostitution” and arranged for a July 26 “date” at the hotel. After negotiating an $80 encounter with the undercover cop, the hooker--a 17-year-old girl--was arrested for prostitution.
Officers then used the girl’s phone to text a person they believed to be her pimp. Posing as the teen, a cop sought some pricing guidance: “How much for anal?” The suspected pimp replied, “Oh shit make him break the bank babe,” before adding that the girl should charge at least $200.
After exchanging a series of texts with the suspected pimp--and arranging for him to pick up the underage prostitute--“Martell Davis arrived at the room where the date was set up with the undercover detective,” according to a U.S. District Court complaint. Arrested for pimping, “Davis was wearing a t-shirt that read ‘I make pimpin’ look easy,’” an investigator noted.

Problem for Bezos: Mall Becoming Cheaper Than Amazon - Corporate Intelligence - WSJ

Paul Sakuma
You might think the biggest challenge for Amazon founder Jeff Bezos is figuring out how to make money running a print newspaper, but here is a risk hitting much closer to home: Brick-and-mortar retail stores are becoming cheaper than AmazonAMZN +0.53%.
At least one store, that is. Prices at Bed Bath & BeyondBBBY +1.50% were on average 6.5% less than at Amazon for a basket of 30 items chosen by analysts atBB&TBBT +0.42% for one of their periodic pricing studies comparing the retailers. “We are becoming increasingly concerned Bed Bath & Beyond is sacrificing gross margin in order to drive top-line growth,” BB&T said — that is, increasingly concerned that Bed Bath & Beyond is starting to behave more like Amazon.
One big factor helping Bed Bath & Beyond are the 20% off coupons it regularly sends to its customers. Once you adjust for those, the price gap widens out to 25%.
But even without the coupons, Bed Bath & Beyond is cheaper than Amazon for many items, sometimes considerably so. This shower curtain, for example, is $24.99 at the former and $32.39 at the latter — a 23% difference before any coupons are taken into account.

Welfare pays more than a minimum-wage job in 35 states...

Looking for a good paying job? Well, look no further.
No, really, stop looking. In 35 states, welfare benefits pay more than a minimum wage job, according to a new study by the libertarian Cato Institute, and in 13 states welfare pays more than $15 per hour.
“One of the single best ways to climb out of poverty is taking a job, but as long as welfare provides a better standard of living than an entry-level job, recipients will continue to choose it over work,” said Michael Tanner, senior policy analyst and co-author of the study.

High African growth rates distort the real development image

A new list of the fastest-growing economies in Africa — and by extension, the world — put out recently by the African Development Bank in its African Economic Outlook 2013 includes some of the poorest countries in Africa, some of which are developing off an extremely low base. At the top are Libya (11.6%), Sierra Leone (9.6%), Chad (9.5%), Côte d’Ivoire (9.3%), Democratic Republic of Congo (8.8%) andGhana (8.4%). Growth rates are used by fund managers, investment bankers and others to portray Africa as the new frontier for growth, in essence to talk up their book.
But high levels of poverty are pervasive across these same economies. Not only is underdevelopment a potential security threat, not fully understanding the nature and spread of that growth also presents investment risks.

NBA Star Drives Armored Truck to Wage War on 'Haters'

Armoredcar

NBA star J.R. Smith's latest giggle-inducing antic? Enlisting an armored military vehicle — the same one driven by The Rock in Fast Five, no less — to tool about New York City.
Smith was reportedly seen out and about in Manhattan after parking the giant truck outside of a restaurant this weekend, prompting a wave of incredulous media attention during August's slow sports news cycle. But even better than the ruggedly flamboyant new ride? Smith's justification for its absolute necessity, which he explained on Twitter on Monday.

Xbox One preorders get free FIFA 14 in Europe, to fend off PS4 | Tech Culture - CNET News

Gamers in Europe who preorder the Xbox One will get a free copy of popular football game FIFA 14, Microsoft has confirmed.

European customers will enjoy the newest version of the footie franchise for free "while stocks last," the company confirmed at the Gamescom trade show in Germany -- a move that's surely designed to fend off competition from Sony's cheaper PlayStation 4 console.

The deal also applies to existing preorders, so there's no need to feel left out if you've already thrown down money for the new console. A FIFA 14 bundle will also be available to buy, for 499 euros, or 429 pounds, which is the starting price of the Xbox One.

So far there's no word on what manner of software treats U.S. gamers can look forward to, but expect similar freebies to be offered when the Xbox One goes on sale.

The move will be designed to make the Xbox One's price tag -- $499 in the U.S. -- more palatable. If there's a decent game chucked in, that could make gamers more willing to splash the cash on a pricey system.

Prince's 'Breakfast Can Wait' Cover Art Is The Best Thing He's Ever Done

Prince has a pretty illustrious career, having defined genres, inspired millions, charted new paths in gender identity and blurred the lines of human sexuality, but it's safe to say nothing the Purple One has done is quite as amazing as the cover art he released for his new song.

The visual for "Breakfast Can Wait" is literally an image of Dave Chappelle playing Prince in a sketch from "The Chappelle Show." Take a look:

Seattle Police Continue Being Awesome by Handing Out 1,000 Bags of Doritos to Stoners | Adweek

Seattle police already had one of the most fascinating and amusing—not to mention relevant and informative—law-enforcement Twitter accounts in the country. But the department demonstrated again this weekend that engaging with your audience goes well beyond witty posts in social media.
Following the legalization of marijuana in Washington last fall, Seattle police decided to hand out 1,000 bags of Doritos to attendees of the three-day Hempfest pot festival—adding stickers to the bags that brilliantly reminded partakers of the do's and don't of marijuana, even when it's legal. "Warning: The contents of this package are as delicious as they appear," the sticker read, while giving pointers like "Don't drive while high," "Don't use pot in public" and "Do listen to Dark Side of the Moon at a reasonable volume."

Useless Plastic Box Going for $99.99 at Best Buy, Thanks to Rascally Artist | Adweek

A street artist named Plastic Jesus (picking an artsy pseudonym in 2013 is like picking an AOL screen name in 1997) stuck it to the man by leaving a fake product—complete with product tag—in five Best Buy stores around Los Angeles. The product is a useless plastic box, and is tagged as such. The product description includes gems like "will not work once you get it home," and "battery life too short to be of use." As an owner of a Dell laptop, I feel the sting of that second comment. The stunt is interesting and well designed, but going after Best Buy at this point is like kicking a dying mule. He or she should have done this in an Apple Store. Via Laughing Squid.

(He was also once on Oprah, when the talk show queen raved about the then-eligible bachelor.)

The Rincon Hill luxury high rise, which cost a reported $6.9 million and then another $1 million in upgrades, is now a crime scene.

Chahal was arrested last week and released on $1 million bail on 47 criminal assault charges against his girlfriend."

Take A Look At Sears' Little-Known Online Sex Toy Store - Business Insider

Everybody knows Sears. It's the place you go to buy basics. Maybe a new hammer or a socket set. It's the strip-mall anchor giant that hedge fund investor Eddie Lampert has spent years trying to turn around.
And now it's also an online sex store.
Jezebel, the feminist culture blog, noticed this link on Sears.com that leads to a "leather adjustable harness" for men. (There's no graphic nudity, but don't click if you work in a conservative environment.) Click on that, and you land on a page that appears to be the online equivalent of Sears' back room, the one with a red neon sign that says "adults only."

Dmitry Agarkov outwits Russian bank by writing own credit card terms

The idea of beating the banks at their own game may seem like a rich joke, but Dmitry Agarkov, a 42-year-old Russian man, may have managed it. Unhappy with the terms of an unsolicited credit card offer he received from online bank Tinkoff Credit Systems, Agarkov scanned the document, wrote in his own terms and sent it through. The bank approved the contract without reading the amended fine print, unwittingly agreeing to a 0 percent interest rate, unlimited credit and no fees, as well as a stipulation that the bank pay steep fines for changing or canceling the contract.
Agarkov used the card for two years, but the bank ultimately canceled it and sued Agarkov for $1,363. The bank said he owed them charges, interest and late-payment fees. A court ruled that, because of the no-fee, no-interest stipulation Agarkov had written in, he owed only his unpaid $575 balance. Now Agarkov is suing the bank for $727,000 for not honoring the contract's terms, and the bank is hollering fraud. "They signed the documents without looking. They said what usually their borrowers say in court: 'We have not read it,'” Agarkov's lawyer said. The shoe's on the other foot now, eh?
